About us
Asahiyama Zoo opened in 1967 in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido. As Japan’s northernmost zoo, it is also a popular tourist destination, attracting approximately 1.3 million visitors each year. The zoo’s behavioral exhibits are designed to bring out animals’ natural abilities and instincts, giving visitors the opportunity to see their lively behaviors in action.
What we do
We hope visitors will discover the wonder, beauty, and preciousness of life as they observe the animals’ daily activities and natural behaviors at our zoo, all while enjoying the comfort of being in a space full of life. We also hope that first-hand interaction with the animals in our petting zoo helps visitors appreciate the warmth and inherent value of life. Our goal is to be a zoo that encourages visitors to reflect on wildlife conservation and environmental issues, and to understand that animals are living beings, just like us.
These are the principles behind our zoo’s vision: “What we convey is life.”
Message from Director
Asahiyama Zoo is committed to conveying animals’ true nature and ways of life in our own words, and to sharing the preciousness and brilliance of life itself. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone whose understanding and support over the years have made it possible for us to advance a wide range of initiatives.
Our zoo is more than just a tourist attraction. Here, we provide animals with an environment in which they can express their natural behaviors and thrive, while also serving as a platform for actively addressing environmental issues. By raising awareness about the current state of the ecosystems in which wild animals live, we hope to inspire each and every one of our visitors to adopt environmentally conscious habits and take action.
Your donations help improve animal care and enhance our programs, supporting the protection of rich natural environments and ecosystems, and helping to preserve them for future generations.
We greatly appreciate your kind support.
