Donation to the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN)

The Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) is a programme established within the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), a public interest incorporated foundation based in Japan. IGES conducts strategic research and policy development on global environmental issues to support sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. The APN secretariat is housed within IGES and its administrative and financial operations are fully managed under IGES’s governance framework.

About APN

Vision

APN’s vision is a dynamic and responsive Asia-Pacific community effectively addressing global  change and sustainability through innovative and transdisciplinary research and capacity development activities that support policy development and implementation, as well as enhancing the role that civil society organisations and the private sector can play.

Mission

APN’s mission is to support a cohesive and interactive community of global change researchers, policymakers, practitioners and civil society across the Asia-Pacific region through innovative and transdisciplinary approaches that draw upon the extensive network of science-policy practitioners. An integral part of its mission is to support and promote the scientific investigations of changes in the Earth’s life support systems and their implications for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. APN contributes to the realisation of these investigations through:

  1. Supporting research and science-based response strategies.
  2. Effectively linking scientific outcomes with policy mechanisms applicable to all levels of governance and societal sectors in each country.
  3. Scientific capacity development within and beyond governments, including affected communities and other members of civil society.

Global change affects all countries, and its impacts and the ability to measure and understand  these impacts intersects different disciplines. Therefore, APN strives to address global change and sustainability in a holistic approach that involves the active participation of all member countries across a broad spectrum of different challenges.

The ability to connect governments, the private sector and civil society has also become more urgent to accelerate the use of innovation and applied science to address the impacts of global change. The role of the private sector in APN's subregions will be explored for the delivery of research outcomes and services to those in need.

Why we need your support

  • Global change is accelerating, with the Asia-Pacific region particularly vulnerable to its impacts.
  • Developing countries face significant challenges in adapting to climate change and water security issues.
  • Research funding for climate adaptation in developing countries remains insufficient.
  • Local communities need scientific knowledge and capacity building to respond effectively.
  • Urgent action is needed to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development Goals.

Why donate to APN

  • 25+ years of experience supporting global change research in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Direct impact on vulnerable communities through science-based adaptation strategies.
  • Support for early career professionals and capacity development in developing countries.
  • Strong partnerships with governments, international organisations and scientific institutions.

Core activities

Collaborative regional research

Through the competitive Collaborative Regional Research Programme (CRRP), APN promotes regional research that has potential to improve the understanding of global change and its implications while contributing to the sound scientific basis for policymaking.

Capacity development

CAPaBLE, APN's scientific capacity development programme, aims to enhance the capacities of scientists, policymakers and practitioners to assess global change issues, and explore options to resolve the issues towards achieving sustainability. Through CAPaBLE, we support activities that
enhance capacities at the individual, organisational and systemic levels.

Science-policy linkages

One of APN's goals is to strengthen the interactions among scientists and policymakers. To this end, we work with governments, research institutions and international partners to develop policy-relevant knowledge products and to create empowering environments conducive to enhancing science-policy interactions.

How your donations are used

Your donation directly supports critical climate adaptation research and capacity building in the Asia-Pacific region. Together, we can build a more resilient future for vulnerable communities.
