Knights In White Lycra (KIWL) is a Japan-based fundraising group of people of all ages and backgrounds who 'get fit & give back' through sporting events. This year in 2025, KIWL has chosen to support NPO Mirai no Mori, an organization that empowers abused, neglected, and orphaned children in Japan, as their charity partner. Through charity events and the annual 4-day cycle ride, KIWL and its riders will raise funds for Mirai no Mori’s life-changing outdoors programs for marginalized youth, helping them develop skills and mindset needed to make their dreams come true.

Challenge

In principle, children living in care are required to leave care homes and live independently at the age of 18, as they graduate from high school, and begin to manage every aspect of their lives. With fewer opportunities for experiential learning due to the limitation of the current child welfare system it is nearly impossible to be fully ready for this sudden and substantial change from the sheltered life in care homes. Many children are overwhelmed by the new problems they encounter, such as managing their finances, balancing work and study, managing new relationships, social prejudice and the stress of being alone.

Solution

Mirai no Mori programs are designed to equip children with the “essential life skills” they will require to overcome the variety of issues they may face when they become independent and create their own path for the future, including resilience, problem solving skills and communication skills. Through Mirai no Mori programs, the children encounter a unique environment where they can think and act on their own, stepping out of their usual self and demonstrating their own ability and potential. We maintain a supportive environment so that when they fail, they can learn from it and try again.

Where your contributions are making a difference

  • Outdoor Adventure Programs: Providing children from care homes with opportunities to explore nature, develop confidence, and learn essential life skills through rafting, hiking, camping, and more.
  • Leadership Development: Through our LIT (Leaders in Training) program, high school students learn about responsibility, communication, and teamwork, preparing them for independent adult lives.
  • Mentorship and Community Building: Our camps foster connections between the youth and volunteers, building lasting relationships that encourage personal growth and a sense of belonging.
  • Support for Graduates: Ongoing support for program graduates, helping them transition smoothly into adulthood and continue their personal development.

Your generous donation will allow us to cover transportation, food, accommodation, camp equipment, insurance, staffing and more for all the participants.
