About the New National Theatre, Tokyo
◇Performance Programmes
The New National Theatre, Tokyo (NNTT) is Japan’s first and foremost national theatre dedicated to contemporary performing arts. Since opening the doors of our world-class, state-of-the-art venue in 1997, we have presented more than 800 diverse productions.
・OPERA
NNTT Opera presents a rich repertoire spanning classical masterpieces to modern works, including operas commissioned from Japanese composers. We are proud to share these homegrown creations on stage, a testament to our commitment to artistic innovation.
・BALLET & DANCE
Our resident company, the National Ballet of Japan, was founded alongside the theatre in 1997 and continues to present world-class performances that captivate audiences and critics alike.
Dance at NNTT embraces the freedom of movement, enabling artists to experiment and create beyond boundaries.
・DRAMA
Each season, our Drama programme presents a bold and diverse lineup shaped by the vision of Artistic Director Eriko Ogawa. Her initiatives include audition-based projects and developmental programmes that explore new systems of theatrical expression, all while holding up a mirror to society and illuminating the world we live in.
◇Young Artists Training Programme
Nurturing the next generation of performing artists is a cornerstone of our mission. Since the launch of the Opera Studio in 1998, the programme has expanded to include the Ballet School in 2001, and Drama Studio in 2005.
Each division offers full-time, professional training delivered by top-tier instructors, encompassing specialized technique, broad cultural knowledge, and artistic refinement. We also provide opportunities for these young talents to shine on stage.
◇Additional Activities
・Performances for young audiences, including:
“Educational Programme for High School Students,” “Ballet for Children,” and “Kids Opera”
・Regional tours across Japan
・International collaborations and co-productions
