In Japan, an estimated 1.46 million people are in a state of "Hikikomori" (social withdrawal), meaning they have remained isolated at home. For many young people, this isolation is not a choice but a result of social pressures and a lack of support. At Sodateage Net, we believe that youth support is a "social investment". By providing a bridge back to society, we help each young person discover their own way to work and live. In doing so, we are not only shaping their future, but also building a shared future for all of us. Your support provides the critical "second chance" they deserve.

About us

Sodateage Net is a Certified NPO in Japan dedicated to supporting unemployed youth and those experiencing social isolation. Our goal is to ensure that all young people—including those who are Hikikomori or NEET—can build a career and life that truly suit them, and find their own sustainable place in society. We act as a vital social infrastructure, collaborating with government agencies, schools, and corporations to ensure that no young person is left to struggle alone.

Why we need your support

The issue of Hikikomori is often mistakenly viewed in Japan as a "family problem" or "self-responsibility," yet it is a significant social challenge that affects the entire community. Japan's aging society and low birthrate make the loss of youthful energy a critical "social loss". Early intervention is essential to prevent long-term isolation, but many youth face "air pockets" in the current safety net due to economic hardship. Your support allows us to provide free programs and practical aid to those who cannot afford the cost of seeking help.

What we do

We offer a multi-layered, step-by-step approach tailored to each individual's pace:
• Parental Consultation: Supporting families who often feel blamed and isolated themselves.
• Outreach & Home Visits: Reaching out to those who cannot yet leave their homes.
• Social Participation Programs: Creating safe spaces for small interactions, volunteering, and learning.
• Job Training: Providing real-world work experience and feedback to build confidence.
• Follow-up Support: Continuous career consulting even after employment to ensure long-term stability.

Message from our Chairperson, Kei Kudo

I grew up in an environment where my parents supported youth who had no place in society. I still remember the tears of joy when they finally found their path. During my studies in Europe, I was moved by the concept of 'social investment.' Supporting a young person’s independence isn't just charity; it is an investment in our collective future. By helping them transition from being supported to becoming active members of society, we create a return that benefits everyone through their passion and contributions.

How your donations are used

Your contributions directly fund life-changing initiatives:
• Free Program Access: Ensuring that economic distress never prevents a young person from receiving support.
• Innovative Support: Developing new outreach methods for those who are most isolated and unreachable by standard government services.
• Social Advocacy & Community Engagement: Promoting public awareness, expanding access to our programs, advocating for improvements in social systems, and fostering grassroots solidarity both in Japan and internationally.

Our work has also been featured by the OECD, highlighting our approach to supporting individuals affected by severe social isolation in Japan.
